PCFD Members Called to Quelch Daytime House Fire
Friday, August 20, 2010
-
On Friday August 20th just prior to noon, Engine 59, Engine 60, Engine 62, Ladder 31, Rescue 40, Car 2393 (2nd Asst. Chief Mcminn) and Car 2395 (Deputy Chief Barnes) were called by Westchester County Fire Control to respond to a reported house fire at 10 Rockland Ave. in the Village of Port Chester.Upon arrival Car 2393 confirmed there was smoke showing and confirmed this was a working fire in a 2 story residential house.

Once a working fire is confirmed by an arriving unit an additional engine is sent to the scene to fill out and complete the first alarm assignment and remaining units are called to stand by in their quaters incase of any other emergencies in the two villages. This brought Engine 63 to the scene while Engine 61 and Engine 64 stood by.

Crews made an innitial search and attack into the building and were able to limit fire spread and damage to a hallway. Smoke was ventilated and thankfully the residents and their pets home at the time escaped unharmed.

Con-Edison was later called to secure utilities while PCPD and the Westchester County Cause and Origin Team worked to investigate the origin of the fire.

The majority of the units were released approximately an hour later while a few remaining units stayed until the completion of the investigation.

Mandatory Carbon Monoxide Alarm law

Homes Must Have Carbon Monoxide Alarms
beginning February 22nd

The New York State Office of Fire Prevention & Control (OFPC) is working to ensure homeowners are aware of the hazards of carbon monoxide and the new state law, known as Amanda’s Law, which, as of February 22, 2010, requires all residences, both new and existing, to have carbon monoxide alarms installed.

The law is named for Amanda Hansen, 16, of West Seneca, who was found unconscious at a friend's house in January 2009. Officials later determined she had been exposed to lethal levels of carbon monoxide in the home's basement, where she and her friend were having a sleepover. She later died at South Buffalo Mercy Hospital.

“Carbon monoxide alarms save lives,” said State Fire Administrator Floyd A. Madison, adding that carbon monoxide poisoning is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the United States. “More than 2,100 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning every year and over 10,000 people are injured, including, on average, 100 New Yorkers.”

Carbon monoxide can be produced when burning any fuel such as; gasoline, charcoal, propane, natural gas, kerosene, oil, wood, or coal. If any flammable or combustible material burns incompletely, carbon monoxide is produced. Carbon monoxide can kill in minutes or hours depending on the level of carbon monoxide in the air.

False Fire Alarms Cost us All
How many false fire alarms are there each day in the United States?
According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than six thousand, and the number is increasing.
The Port Chester Fire Department has posted a 60-second video clip on its website to help inform the local community about the growing nationwide problem. Being aware of our alarms and maintenance of the system can decrease the amount of false alarms received.  “We definitely can do something about it locally,” says the Villages Fire Chief, Robert Drought. “We’re asking everyone to take it seriously, and let others know it’s not okay to cause a false alarm.”
The chief adds, “Last year, we responded to 1067 fire alarms last year and 85-92% that turned out to be false. The problem is, these alarms risk the safety of our firefighters as well the public. They keep us from responding quickly to other calls, and they cost a lot of money our community can use for real emergencies.”
The false alarm video clip may be viewed on the fire department’s website by Clicking Here.
