Members Wanted

Did you know that there are over 800,000 volunteer firefighters in the United States that make up 72% of all the firefighters in the country? Everyone knows their community has a fire department. But did you know that your Department is primarily comprised of volunteers? Becoming a volunteer firefighter is a rewarding experience that will live with you for years to come.

Washington Engine & Hose, Co. #4 is looking for new members to join our volunteer fire company. Without our dedicated members who unselfishly give up their time, we could not continue our tradition of helping others in a time of need, as we have since 1903. Come be a part of a great tradition and membership.

Washington Park is one of seven independent volunteer fire companies located with Port Chester. We are a primary provider of fire and rescue services to the Villages of Port Chester and Rye Brook.

Each of our dedicated firefighters is a non-paid professional that come from all walks of life ranging from Police Officer to Stock Trader, Masons to Insurance Professionals, Engineers to College Students. We are individuals with families, and long commutes to and from work each day. Some reside in the Village while others travel to donate their time. The one thing we all have in common is being volunteer firefighters, dedicated to helping others. We give countless hours of our time and effort all without a salary. We train rigorously and when called to duty, are proud to serve the residents of Port Chester and Rye Brook.

As a volunteer fire company, we depend on individuals just like you, who are willing to help provide fire protection for the community and lend a hand towards preserving this great organization.

Thinking about becoming a volunteer?

If you are eighteen years of age or older, are willing to learn and train with a great group of people and want to provide a service to your community, then we have a position for you with the Washington Engine & Hose Company.

But firefighting is not for you...

Washington Park Fire Company has many positions other than firefighting that are filled by our volunteers. Would you like to help out with our fund raising, Annual Family Picnic, softball team, members Christmas party, communion breakfast, open house or other fund raising efforts? If you answered yes to any of these, then don't hesitate to just come over and meet some of the members and ask questions.

Commitment…

A member of the “Park” is dedicated to the Department's mission of protecting the community. As expected, volunteering as a firefighter is a serious commitment of time and energy. To remain active, fire department members are often required to attend monthly meetings, truck maintenance drills and safety checks.

Application Process…

There is an application process for prospective members to complete and is comprised of the an interview with a committee of members and a background/reference investigation. The application will then be introduced to the company members at our monthly business meeting for vote.

New Members…

New members are considered probationary and are required to successfully complete the State of New York Fire Essentials I & II. After completing Essentials, the probationary firefighter will be allowed to participate in a support capacity with department activities, Company Social Activities, training and respond to calls.

Frequently Asked Questions. . .

1) How much time does it take to be a volunteer?
It varies from week to week, but on the average you’ll put in five to seven hours. Many volunteers enjoy putting in more.

2) How many members make up the company and where do they come from?
There are approximately 50 active members in the company. All active members are residents of, or work around the community (Port Chester, Rye, Rye Brook, Greenwich). It’s important to note that most members start with no firefighting experience-- just a desire to help provide a valuable community service.

3) What else do you do other than fight fires and train?
The membership has several social functions throughout the year, including New Years Day, St. Pats Day, Annual Dinner Dance, Annual Family Picnic, Softball games, Bowling, College Football trip, and Christmas Party.

4) Is there a way to learn more about the department to see if I would be interested in joining?
Absolutely, The Membership meets the first Friday of each month. We also drill at the fire house (464 Westchester Ave.) on a regular basis. We would also be around if you see us out on the road returning from a call. Any of these times would be a great opportunity to come down and meet the current members and get a better idea of the variety of company functions.

5) I like fire engines, but I have no experience.
No problem. If you are willing to learn, we have training that every new fire fighter completes at the Westchester County Fire Training Center located in Valhalla. We also conduct on-going drills at the Fire Training Center and around the village. We're looking for people who are willing to spend a little time making our Village a safe environment, while enjoying the experience.

6) I'd like to join, but I am busy and not always available.
This is the same situation for every member. That's why you are important. While we have some minimum requirements, we ask people to respond when they are available. There are no set times that requires you to be present.

7) What will my training cost be?
It will cost you nothing. Thousands of dollars of valuable career training will be made available to you free of charge.

8) Will I have any out-of-pocket costs?
Your uniform, equipment – even your annual physical – will be provided for free. The only expense you will be required for is a small membership fee.
