CFL BULBS AND MERCURY
CFL BULBS AND MERCURY

If you break a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) follow the procedures below to minimize health hazards:

1. Open windows to reduce mercury concentrations for fifteen minutes to clear the room of mercury.

2. Don’t touch mercury if it has spilled.

3. Clean up broken CFL glass carefully and immediately (but not with your hands or vacuum cleaner.)

4. Wipe the affected area with a paper towel to remove all glass fragments into a sealed plastic bag and bring the sealed bag to your local household hazardous waste collection site.

ESCAPE PLAN FOR MULTI-STORY BUILDING
ESCAPE PLAN FOR MULTI-STORY BUILDING

  • If you are trapped in an apartment, fill the bathtub up with water. Reason: To keep door cool with a wet towel, and to place a wet towel along the bottom of door to keep smoke out. Also seal heating vents with tape to keep smoke out.
  • Keep a flash light and house keys on a night table next to bed. Reason: If you try to escape and your means of egress is blocked, you can retreat back into your apartment until help arrives.
  • Count number of doors to the fire exit from your apartment. DON’T USE ELEVATORS!!! USE STAIRS!!!
  • If you are trapped, hang a sheet out the window and wait for help to arrive Don’t JUMP!
  • If room fills up with smoke you can open top window five inches and bottom window about five inches. Top window will let smoke out, bottom window will let air in. Don’t BREAK IT. You may need to close it.
  • If you smell smoke, call the fire department even if you think someone else called.
  • Above all, stay calm!!
  • Remember, the safest escape plan may be to stay where you are in a multi-story building.

Nationwide Effort to Ban Novelty Lighters
Do you know what a novelty lighter is? It’s one that works like any other
Lighter, except that it looks like a child’s toy. The Port Chester Fire Department is asking for help locally in a nationwide effort to ban novelty lighters.
Port Chester Fire Chief, Robert Drought, explains, “You can see the size of the problem by just visiting EBay. There are literally hundreds of lighters disguised as toy animals, cell phones, key rings, balls and other colorful items that are attractive to children. The problem is, whether the novelty lighters come from EBay or a local store, kids are being injured by these unsafe products. We can stop that.”
The fire department is asking parents not to purchase novelty lighters or keep them at home. A video message showing examples of novelty lighters may be viewed on the department’s website by Clicking Here.
